Now a Certified Arborist, Anderson has been Downeys arborist since September 1, 2001. For three years prior to that she served as Downeys VISTA Volunteer, writing several successful grant applications and working with the Gem Community Committee, Downey Tree Committee and the Downey Area Chamber of Commerce.
Her first major project as a Certified Arborist will be the compilation of a tree guide with the assistance of landscape architect Gerry Bates of Three Rivers Resource, Conservation and Development.
A grant is providing funds for the twelve-page guide, which will give Downey residents a listing of trees that grow well in the local climate, as well as how to care for them after they are planted.
Anderson said the booklet will be ready for distribution by Downey Arbor Day on May 17 at a cost of $1 per book.
To receive her certification as an arborist, Anderson was required to attend numerous workshops, study books on trees and take tests. The purpose of the ISA Certification Program is to improve the level of knowledge and standard of practice within the tree care profession.
It is designed to assist the public in identifying those professionals in arboriculture to have demonstrated through a processionally developed education and examination program that they have a thorough knowledge of tree care practices. The ISA program tests and certifies an individuals knowledge in the field of Arboriculture.
Certification is valid for three years, and all Certified Arborists carry a wallet identification card for verification. They are expected to continually study and gain knowledge in the field of arboriculture to maintain the certification.
The International Society of Arboriculture is a scientific and educational organization devoted to the dissemination of information in the care and preservation of shade and ornamental trees.
ISAs Certification Program is designed to promote the
professional development of those involved in the field of arboriculture or
tree care. When contracting for tree care needs, the ISA suggest home owners
contact individuals who are certified through this voluntary program.
